While it's well-known that cats hunt birds and small mammals, the extent of their insect-eating habits is often overlooked. As biologists, we've been studying the diets of feral and outdoor-roaming cats for years, and our findings have been eye-opening.
The Global Impact of Free-Ranging Cats
Free-ranging cats, whether feral or outdoor pets, are considered invasive species. They exist in every ecosystem worldwide, except Antarctica. This global presence raises questions about their impact on local ecosystems and endangered species.
Our research involved evaluating hundreds of scientific studies, books, and reports over two decades. We searched for keywords like "cat predation" and "cat diet" and analyzed the data to understand the species cats consume.
A Diverse Diet
Our initial findings, published in 2023, revealed that cats eat nearly 2,100 different animal species, including invertebrates. This diversity is remarkable and highlights the adaptability of cats as predators.
Of these species, a significant number are listed as "near threatened," "vulnerable," or "endangered" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List. Some have even gone extinct during the period covered by our data.

Invertebrates make up over 70% of all terrestrial animal species and play crucial roles as pollinators, predators, and herbivores in most non-marine ecosystems. Unfortunately, many invertebrate species are in decline globally due to urbanization, habitat destruction, pollution, and climate change.
Our research identified 148 specific invertebrate species consumed by cats, including some endangered or vulnerable species like the Aldabran grasshopper, the Tasmanian giant freshwater crayfish, the wētāpunga, the common yabby, and the Canary Islands horned beetle.

While we haven't found formal research evaluating the impact of cats on invertebrate populations, it's possible that cats could significantly contribute to the decline of rare species or in specific locations. Cats require a substantial amount of protein, and invertebrates provide an easily accessible and nutritious food source.
The challenge of studying this aspect lies in the small size and soft bodies of many invertebrates, which make field observation difficult and require more sophisticated lab techniques. However, new studies using molecular technologies to analyze cat stomach contents and scat are promising and may provide more detailed insights into their outdoor diets and environmental impact.
